Question for copywriter boy

Since most people have decided this is clever, I will assume you are.

Now, tell me: why are TV commercials, and worse, radio jingles, that were originally made in Hindi, being translated to Tamil? I’d rather watch translated versions of obscure European advertisements, made in societies and cultures I don’t know enough to despise.

    the latest tamil dubbed Ad for IPL is a good example (idhu araPPol alla, akkaporum alla)

    First line: You don’t have to assume. I am.

    Second point: Because Tamil desam is still under the evil, tyrannical rule of the Hindi tribe and not enough is being done to send the gaboors packing.

    Also, it so happens that ad budgets and ad campaigns are decided by bombay and delhi type people sitting in Marine drive or DLF city. If you notice, most of these are FMCG products - and when did we last have the killer FMCG product out of Madras? (Cavin Kare is being run by gaboors in the product and marketing depts, though the company is still tam owned.)

    A significant bit regarding this is that, all Hindi ads are invariably “remade” in Tamil when it is to be shown in a Tamil channel. I mean, it’s never just “dubbed” with Tamil lines, while that is the case with most ads (or so it used to be) for all other regional languages. Think of those who watch dubbed ads!

    Zero, did you see the latest ad for Pepsi with Shah Rukh and Ranbir? I thought the Hindi ad was horrible. But that was only till I saw the dubbed version in Tamil. I puked all over my TV screen.

    Compared to other regions, the # of thamizh customized advts are more. However, that is dying. Director Seeman will tell you why.

    I thought all Tamil ads are invariably customized (read “remade”)… Regardless of whether it has SRK or some cute housewife-like TV actress, they all lip-sync again for the Tamil version if there’s one.

    Tamil is one screwed up language unlike Thamizh. Colloquial Tamil stinks Illakiya Thamizh rocks!

    will ad boy answer my doubt?
    why when you dub an ad involving hindi movie song, you cant substitute a tam movie song?
    (e.g) vodafone magic box - the scene shows someone listening to the fm radio in railway station and uthe sab ke kadam playing from it.
    now, they have gone and meticulously written *new* tam lyrics and recorded a tamil song for that tune in tamil in the dubbed tamil version.
    I mean, why do you spend time and money writing new lyrics and recording a brand new version of the song in tamil - is it not cheaper/easier to just pick some random tamil song, say , raja kaiya vecha, and play it in the background during the dubbing for the tamil version. And how many in tamil land would recognise the obscure 80’s hindi song tune to relate to it. Is it not more relevant showing someone listening to a *tamil* movie song in the tamil version? Wouldnt that strike a better chord?

    i mean, in this case, there isnt even the lip-sync problem. it is just a f**king song shown as playing from the f**king radio!

    punnakku: I don’t know what channel you were watching, but those Vodafone ads have old superhit Tamil songs in them. One song, from Server Sundaram, is a fave too.
