I have always maintained that the (h)i(gh)er you go, the more Iyengar you become. Thanks Nilu for confirming the same.

That is only in TVS.

Sri, Vadama muththinaa Vaishnavan, theriyumo :-).

I am not a Vadama and not the ‘I’ fellow

Dasavatharam dekho jab release hogaa - Saivite Chola King eats humble pie before die-hard Vaishnavite Iyengarhassan.

“saivite” is not always interchangable with “smartha.”
And Iyengardom is on the way to extinction.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Yeah, “I” know that - the “Smart” among them convert to Iyengarism, at least by spirit ;-). (Reg. the second line, you wish…)

It is a sad fact that Iyengars are on their way to extinction. There are only 600,000 now, and the age pyramid is skewed to the over 60s.
Predicting this in the last yuga itself, Krishna was born a yadava, so they could claim OBC category in this one. As Velukkudi Krishnan says. Avan Sarvamum Arindhavan.

Avataram, good to have you on this thread - can you write the op-ed piece that I had asked for in the comments section a few posts back?
May 1st, 2008 at 3:52 am
600,000? How?
I am hoping you haven’t stooped to the extent where you are considering thenkalais to be brahmins. Commitment to ideology is a greater cause than sexual utility — just in case you forgot.

Nilu, I’ll sue you for a million dollars for your comments, since I am a cross-breed (appa - Thenkalai and amma - Vadakalai of Ahobila Mutt) and hence Thenkalai by default. Manavaala Maamunigal is as important, if not more, than Vedanta Desikar (there is historical evidence for this too).

No talking. These iyengars should be nuked.

Contradictory wishes can be dangerous. If you want $1 to be equal to Re1, you may want to sue Nilu for more than a million dollars.
That said, I have always been confused why Manavaala Mamunigal looks exactly like Ramanujar, except for a turban. I hope Rules can throw some light on this.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Avataram, if wishes were horses :-). Actually, I don’t have any delusions of the rupee achieving parity with the dollar anytime soon (maybe if I do slap a case on Nilu in the Indian courts system, it might, in the time it takes for the case to come up for hearing ;-)). I can hopefully get Rs. 1C even if the dollar were to come crashing down, at least going by PPP (given historically it always hovered around the Rs. 10 to a dollar).
I too have wondered about the striking resemblance of Manavaala Maamunigal to Ramanujar and didn’t have to look too hard on the web for an answer (http://www.saranagathi.org/acharyas/mamuni/index.htm)
When he was 60, Sri RanganAthA wanted to honor Sri ManavALa Maamunigal for all his kaimkaryams in spreading the message of NaalAyira Dhivya prabhandham. He commanded Sri MM to conduct an year long lecture series on SatAri Soori’s ThiruvAimozhi at Srirangam in His presence. All the regular uthsavams for the Lord of Srirangam was cancelled that year, while He heard the pravachanams on ThiruvAimozhi based on all the five commentaries starting from aRAyirappadi. At the conclusion of these pravachanams, a small boy with dhivys tEjas came from the back of the sadas and sang a verse that has come to be known as the Taniyan for Sri MaNavALa MaamunigaL:
srIsailEsa dayaapaatram dhIbhakthyAdhi guNArNavam
YathIndhra pravaNam VandhE RamyajAmAtharam munim
The audience and Sri MM were wonderstruck after the small boy disappeared as fast as he came on the scene. Later, through His archakAs, Sri RanganAthA revealed that it was He who appeared as a boy to pronounce the famous Taniyan for Sri ManavALa Maamunigal, who is considered as a reincarnation of AchArya RaamAnujA.

But tell me Rules, did not Ramanujar convert people of backward classes to Vaishnavism, who eventually went on to become thenkalai iyengars? True to that, most thenkalai iyengars are dark. Nee eppadi?

I, that is what I was expecting from you when you (and perhaps Nilu too) showed your ignorance by outrightly condemning Thenkalais. To get your question out of the way about me, I am very fair and this has nothing to do with Thenkalai or Vadakalai since both my parents are fair and so were my ancestors on both sides. While it is true that Ramanujar did indeed convert many people regardless to caste to SriVaishnavites, it does not mean that all Thenkalais are dark or all Vadakalais are fair. In fact, I have seen enough dark-colored Vadakalais as I have seen in Thenkalais too.
Thenkalai and Vadakalai have just a small ideological difference in perception of the Supreme and there is a Wiki entry for Thenkalai which will help you understand why the division happened in the first place (although surprisingly there is no entry for Vadakalai). The latter use more of Vedam and Sanskrit in their religious observances while the former also include the Naalaayira Divya Prabhandam (Thamizh and hence Then-Kalai). When was it ever bad to include your own mother tongue in worshipping the divinity, especially if it is Thamizh that is as sweet as that found in the Azhwar Paasurams?

Rules, please submit evidence in the form of photographs of three hot chicks who are thenkalai.
Avataram is a cop out. Though he has evidence to the contrary he won’t submit it.

Nilu, did know it will come down to this finally :-). Fish in your own backyard and no cross-overs.

For long the people of lower castes ‘coverted’ by Ramanujar were called ‘Black Brahmins’ in Tamil Nadu. Caste debate notes within the TN assembly of the 1980s and 1990s were rife with mention of these folk.
Even today, in the interiors of TN if you come across a rare tea kadai aalu, black as night, swilling tea, wearing a poonal, his ancestors were probably 18th century ‘converts’ by Ramanujar.
But I’m told the Iyer chap’s piss is a perfect parabola and has never been challenged by Iyengar chappies who cannot piddle to that perfect arc.
